The leaders in value based on the above formulas. IP are divided by 9 to get games. That gets multiplied by .400 and .500 to get the number of wins by a replacement pitcher and an average pitcher. Then the Pythagorean winning percentage is calculated for each pitcher, assuming they allow an average number of runs (4, which is close to the historical average-this is the right way to do it since all of these seasons are adjusted to the league and yearly conditions through the constant term) and and give up their DIPS ERA. That gets multiplied by the number of games to get Pythagorean wins. Then the wins by a replacement pitcher and an average pitcher gets subtracted from Pythagorean wins to get each pitcher’s value.
